Our dear friend (and our wedding photographer!) Sarah, of Arrow and Apple joined us in Phoenix and took some amazing pics. I think this is one of the most beautiful shots I’ve ever seen from a live concert:
It’s funny, I don’t even remember her taking the pictures. She really knows how to capture a moment without being seen, or distracting from what is happening on stage. Here are a few more:

This entry was written on July 14th 2011, and was tentatively named CR so I would later remember that I was talking about “Chemical Reaction”. At the time I wrote this, the only thing finished was the intro for the song, and the strings on the first verse. The song took several sharp turns after this, but it was a good start.

Most of my day was wasted. I sat and tried working on some parts for a song, and I hated all of my ideas. Around 5 this evening, I switched gears and started working on an old demo that Stacy sent me back in March. I just want to say for the record, that the music I created tonight was probably the most beautiful thing I’ve ever written. I felt in love with music again. I chased this idea all evening, and left my studio about 15 minutes ago. It felt like a first date- I didn’t want it to end. It would have been easy to work all night on this, but I’d rather save some of this inspiration for tomorrow.
One more thing. As I was driving home, I had the thought, “Wow, no one’s music moves me the way that the music I wrote tonight does.” Then, I thought, “Don’t even say that internally. It’s incredibly arrogant”. But I fought back. I said to myself, “If I can’t write music that moves me, then why should anyone else’s music?”. These are my damn feelings coming out through the strings. My music should move me more than anything else. And I’m not ashamed to say that it usually does. (I haven’t forgotten that this is actually Stacy’s song by the way…) My hope for anyone reading this, is that you are able to say the same with the artistic ventures in your life.

This is an entry from July 9th, 2011. We had been tracking for four days with no AC, working on the most agressive song on the album, “Stampede”. Here’s a little peek into the process:

More drum tracks with Darren today. In case any of you are as nerdy as me about gear, here’s our very simple setup:
Many of the drum tracks we’ve been working on are set up like this. A snare, floor tom, and rack tom mic’d up with a Neumann M-149. We moved the drums out into the hall to catch a little bit of natural reverb. Another upside to this approach, is that it keeps Darren from having to work in the drum room- which gets really hot. There is actually no AC up on the second floor, and it’s a little rough. Neither Darren nor Stacy have complained at all since we’ve started, and I appreciate that. Last time they were here, it was the middle of winter and you could almost see your breath up there- which is why we have pictures of Stacy recording with an electric blanket on. Nothing but positive vibes from these two fine friends!
